How to upgrade your PC to Windows 11

Microsoft’s free Windows 11 upgrade from Windows 10 is now rolling out. Everyone using windows 10 can upgrade their PC for free provided they have a compatible PC. Not every existing PC running Windows 10 will be able to upgrade to Windows 11, though. The upgrade process requires a minimum system requirement of the following specifications:

  •  Processor: 1GHz or faster with 2 or more cores
  •  Memory: 4 GB RAM
  •  Storage: 64 GB or larger storage
  •  TPM: Trusted Platform Module VERSION 2.0

That leaves millions of PCs unable to officially upgrade to Windows 11, although there will be unsupported workarounds if you really need Windows 11. Check and confirm that your PC is officially supported. Head to the Windows 11 Specifications page and scroll to the bottom until you see the Check for compatibility section. Click the Download PC Health Check App link which will download the program and then install it. Click the Check now button inside the app. You will be informed through a notification if your computer is compatible.

Microsoft is also gradually rolling out Windows 11, so the free upgrade won’t be offered to all existing PCs that are officially supported just yet. All existing and eligible PCs should be offered the Windows 11 upgrade by mid-2022, according to Microsoft.

If your PC meets the minimum system requirements, you can upgrade it to Windows 11 using the following procedure. There are various options for installing Windows 11 media.

Check for Updates

  • The first step is always to back up all of your important data in case you bump into problems.
  • On your Windows 10 PC, head into Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
  • Click the check for updates button.
  • If Windows 11 upgrade is available, you will have the option to download and install.

  • Another method to upgrade your PC would be by using the windows 11 installation assistant. Visit the Download Windows 11 page and click the Download Now button under the windows 11 installation assistant section.
  • Run the downloaded file as an administrator.
  • Click the Accept and install button to accept the license terms and your Windows 11 installation will upgrade to Windows 11.
  • Click restart now.
  • Your PC will restart a few times during the installation but make sure you do not turn it off. You will then be able to use your Windows 11.

Microsoft’s Media creation tool

Another method is using the Microsoft’s Media Creation Tool to perform a clean install of windows 11.

Download this tool from Microsoft’s official website > Download Windows 11 page > Create windows 11 installation media section.

Run the downloaded file as an administrator, read and accept the license terms then select the language and edition for windows 11.

Choose the media you wish to use, the USB flash drive or the ISO file.

  •  USB flash drive: Make sure to use a USB drive with at least 8GB of space is attached. Files will be downloaded into the flash overriding any content it has. Then open the drive and double-click the setup.exe file to kick off the upgrade.
  •  ISO file: Save the file to be downloaded to a location you can easily remember and access. After the file is downloaded you can navigate to the file and burn the file to a DVD.

Go to the Windows Update settings and check for updates, then accept the license terms. Install to run the upgrade.

Attach the USB flash drive or DVD to the PC you wish to install windows 11 and then restart it. Your PC should automatically boot to the USB or DVD. If it doesn’t then you might have to check and change the boot order in your PC’s BIOS or UEFI’s settings. Your USB or DVD media should come first for it to work. After a successful restart, you can then finish installing windows by choosing your required preferences. Congratulations, your windows 11 is now ready.

Another method is downloading the windows 11 ISO file.

You can find it from Microsoft’s official website > Download Windows 11 page > Download Windows 11 Disk Image (ISO) section.

Select the product language, click Confirm, and then click the Download button to get the ISO file. After downloading, double-click the ISO file and then double-click the setup.exe file.
